It seems that
replica kit cars such as the Lamborghini Diablo, Ferrari
355, and Ferrari 512 Testarossa are gaining popularity at an
alarming rate. The original versions of these cars use
fairly flush faced wheels with negative off-set. This type
of wheel leaves more room between the wheel mounting surface
and the vehicle chassis, allowing the engineers to perform
better magic with the suspension geometry. In general, the
longer the suspension links, the better the suspension
geometry. When the Fiero based clones try to duplicate this
wide stance they are faced usually with two options, neither
of which is ideal. The first option is the use of rims with
lots of negative off-set to fill up the wheel opening. There
are two things wrong with this. First, the wheels do not
look original and second, too much off-set is detrimental to
wheel bearing longevity. The second option is the use of
wheel spacers. Thin wheel spacers can usually be used
without creating too much trouble but some of the track
increase requirements mean using spacers which are
dangerous. Front wheel spacers and off-sets always modify
the steering geometry by increasing the scrub radius which
affects performance and usually creates tire/fender
interference.
The third and most sensible option is to install longer
suspension links similar to the original Ferrari ,
Lamborghini etc. Our wide track kits for the front and rear
suspension include longer control arms and convert the
existing suspension to the coil-over adjustable type. This
allows the use of standard off-set, original looking wheels
safely and actually improves the suspension geometry at the
same time. The rear kit includes strut relocation hardware to
correctly position the struts.
We can supply kits to widen the front track by up to 6" and
the rear track by up to 8". It is important to note that
when widening the rear suspension, the original Fiero axles
will be too short. Also when the rear struts are located
further outboard, a new strut shaft access hole will need to
be drilled in the top of the strut tower. The new strut hats
supplied can be used as templates for this purpose. In some
cases depending on engine / transaxle combination, when
increasing the track width, only the short axle needs to be
replaced as the existing long axle can be used in its place.
We can supply longer axles for other increases. There may
also be a problem with the brake flex hoses. We can help
here with braided Teflon hoses and fittings.
